Broken Metafield References in Shopify: Repair Dangling Links

The problem

Metafield references connect products to size charts, compatible models, collections, and variant swatches. When the referenced object is deleted or the GID format changes, the reference dangles: the admin UI still shows a field, the storefront renders an empty block, and AI feeds lose the relationship entirely. Nothing errors loudly — the data just stops working.

Diagnostic checklist

• Scan list and single-reference metafields for GIDs that resolve to deleted objects.
• Check product-to-product compatibility references after catalog cleanups.
• Find references pointing at drafts or unpublished products that shoppers cannot reach.
• Verify that metaobject references match current definition types.
• Watch for references broken by migrations that reassigned product IDs.
